The Gelasian has been formally accepted as third (and uppermost) subdivision of the Pliocene Series, thus rep- resenting the Upper Pliocene. The Global Standard Stratotype-section and Point for the Gelasian is located In the Monte S. Nicola section (near Gela, Sicily, Italy).
