50th Anniversary (1956-2006) of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH): The Association and its Mission

Following the Second World War, a group of academic and government geologists working in the newly-emerging field of groundwater began meeting at the International Geological Congresses (London, 1948; Algiers, 1952). This led in 1956 at the IGC in Mexico City to the inaugural meeting of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and the election of its first Council under Professor Fourmarier of Belgium. The founding group was largely European and not well linked with the parallel advances in the understanding of ground-water being made in North America — what better justification for an international community of hydrogeologists!
