IGCP 450/502 Field Workshop

The UNESCO/IUGS working groups on sediment-hosted sulphide deposits of West Gondwana (IGCP 450) and on global comparison of volcanic-hosted massive sulphide districts (IGCP 502) sponsored a joint international field workshop from 27 September to 6th October 2005 to various Pro-terozoic base metal deposits in South Africa and Namibia. Although the focus was on deposits of Namibia and South Africa, the perspective was global and drew on our current understanding of this broad class of deposits world-wide. The principlal objective was to expand the current understanding of the genesis of sulphide deposits of West Gondwana, to better define the key attributes that are important to exploration, and to refine exploration models that could be applied readily in the field. Additional objectives included establishing professional contacts between geoscientists and students, and enhancing the exchange of ideas on genetic and exploration models.
