Immortal River: The Upper Mississippi in Ancient and Modern Times

Calvin Fremling, Professor Emeritus of Biology (Winona State University), has devoted approximately sixty years of his life as both a scientist and avid hunter/ fisherman to observing and studying the Upper Mississippi River. Thus, as he modestly notes, he feels "almost qualified" to write this book. For those of us interested in the natural history of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR), the portion of the river that runs from its headwaters in Lake Itasca in the north woods of Minnesota to its confluence with the Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois, I think it is fair to say that Fremling's Immortal River is the book that we have been waiting for. Although other excellent books and technical reports about the UMR are available (e.g., Afinson 2003, Scarpino 1985, U.S. Geological Survey 1999), the scope and depth of Fremling's book are unmatched.
