Blue Planet in Green Shackles - What Is Endangered: Climate or Freedom?

This book is the fullest statement so far of Vaclav Klaus's denial that climate change is a pressing social and environmental problem. Originally published in 2007 under the Czech title Modrd, nikoli zelend planeta (A Blue, Not Green Planet), the English text was printed in the United States by the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a right-wing think tank. It concentrates on two related themes: a broad attack on environmentalism in general and then a discussion of the specific issue of climate change. Given the opportunity to write a book about one of his favourite pet peeves, one might have expected the author - who is currently President of the Czech Republic, and also a professor at the University of Economics in Prague - to take as much space as necessary to clearly express his views on the issue. Yet this slim book simply indulges in a polemic attack on caricatured adversaries, rather than making a lucid intellectual contribution to one of the most important policy debates of our time. The context in which this book was written and published suggests that obfuscation of the issue may actually be its main goal.
