This is the first time in the automobile industry's history that it finds itself confronted simultaneously by a number of challenges, any one of which could cause drastic changes in one of the most important sectors of industry. Increasing global competition for future markets in China, Russia, Brazil and India, major investments in research and development for alternative forms of propulsion systems and comprehensive climate protection measures call for massive strategic, financial and technological efforts by automobile manufacturing companies. Climate protection can be understood as a kind of crystallisation point in this respect, since it forms a link between these individual challenges, which are jointly reflected in it. In his book Greening the Car Industry: Varieties of Capitalism and Climate Change, John Mikler deals with climatic change as a central automobile industry topic.
