Past and Present Perspectives

In recent years, animal ethics has become a mainstream part of the applied ethics curriculum. This is partly a reflection of the growing academic interest in the moral status of animals, but probably owes more to the fact that societal concern about our treatment of animals has grown considerably in the last twenty or thirty years. This volume, published in Germany with a Greek editor, is both an account of the character of the academic debate as well as being itself a product of the increasing interest. It consists of a collection of articles, some original contributions and some previously published, on various aspects of animal ethics. It is divided, according to the contents page at least, into two sections, the first considering the historical evolution of the debate, and the latter bringing the story up to date.
