What the Ancients Can Teach Us about Ethics, Virtue and Sustainable Living

This book tackles head on the reality and urgency of growing unsustainability, the growing scientific evidence that humanity needs to alter its development trajectory and metabolic/material relationship with the planet, and the failure of any adequate political, economic or culture response to that crisis of unsustainability. As Lane puts it, 'with mounting scientific evidence ... Western democracies by and large are still mired in inertia, unwilling to take the steps necessary to meet the looming challenge of climate change ... the reality of the challenge is in large part a failure of the collective imagination' (p. 8). Unfortunately, this promise of a focus on imagination is constrained by an unnecessary constraining of the political imagination to the 'greening of capitalism' as the solution. The 'c' of creativity fettered by the 'c' of capitalism as it were.
