Factor analysis was used to identify patterns in multivariate datasets, linking microscopic observations of activated sludge with plant performance and operating conditions for laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor 9SBR) and continuous-flow systems treating dairy processing wastewater. Thiothrix I and II appear to be temperature-related morphological variants of the same organism, with tThiothrix I being observed at temperatures > 20 deg. C and Thiothrix II bing observed at temperatures <20 deg. C, adding weight to observations made elsewhere.
