Laboratory-scale tests have been conducted to reduce odour from domestic garbage waste kept for two weeks in a container. A 5W UV lamp OSRAM HNS 5/U0ZE27 inducing ozone formation was used at a rate of 7 hours per day. Using The Electronic nose FOX 3000 technique, the odour expressed as Sensorial Odour Perception (SOP) units, was 19470 SOP_av.1~-1 gas, while in the non-treated control it was 132 000 SOP_av 1~-1 gas. The results showed that off gases from domestic waste became less charged after having been subjected to an UV lamp producing O_3, This technique offers potential for the storage of waste, avoiding odour and flies breeding during summer time in the temperate climates and during all seasons in warm countries.
