The concept of treating low strength municipal wastewater and the resultant sludge in a single unit was tested using a synthetic feed and two anaerobic filters. These two filters were started-up separately using a stepped incremental loading until an organic loading rate (OLR) of 4 kg COD m~-3 d~-1 was achieved. The integrated double filter unit (i. e. operated in series) was then operated at this OLR until steady state had been achieved. The process was then operated at OLRs of 3,4,6 and 8 kg COD m~-3 d~-1 and at each rate the sequence of primary and secondary filters was alternated.
