Planning for rivers with waterpower facilities

Many waterpower generation facilities in Canada are over 50 years old and were constructed prior to the enactment of provincial environmental assessment legislation. Therefore, environmental and social (First Nations, recreational and tourism) values were not considered to the degree that they are today with new waterpower developments. Several waterpower operators in Canada recognized this deficiency and, with encouragement from federal and provincial government resource agencies, have voluntarily introduced changes in water levels and flows into their operational plans to improve conditions for the aquatic ecology and resource users of a river system.
