Germany's Strategy for Sustainable Development

In April of 2002, the Federal Government of Germany outlined Us "Strategy for Sustainable Development." It includes 21 targets and indicators for sustainable development, and outlines perspectives for a 21st century Germany, that is sustainable into the future. The aim of this strategy is a careful balance between the needs of today's generation and the life perspectives of future generations. This paper presents the main thrusts behind Germany's plans to maintain that balance. Adapted from a press release issued announcing the strategy, it identifies seven "priority action" areas, where "changes of course" are needed to achieve a system of sustainable development. These focus points represent, in concrete form, principles of sustainable development relevant to actions of the Federal Government and other players.
