Sustainable Engineering for Engineers

I am pleased to be able to have a public space to continue my discussion of green and sustainable engineering, and appreciate that Gary Bennett, the editor of Environmental Progress, has asked me to author this regular column. I will try to use this space to discuss and promote activities in sustainable engineering that I believe to be relevant to engineers in general. I will also attempt to draw a distinction between green chemistry, green engineering, and sustainability, as I did in the introduction that I wrote for the special issue on sustainability (Abraham, 2004). Because of the tremendous amount of research and development activity in sustainability, it is impossible to cover everything in this short space; so I will try to focus on those items that I consider to be of special importance to chemical and environmental engineers.
