American Society of Civil Engineers Signs Sustainability Protocol

On July 4, 2006, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) joined the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE) in signing a Sustainability Protocol entitled "A Sustainable Future for the Planet." This article will summarize the principal elements of the Protocol. It will then summarize the positions and actions ASCE has taken to promote sustainable engineering education and practice in recent years, and new steps under consideration.
