AlChE ENVIRONMENTAL DIVISION NEWSLETTER

It is my honor to serve as the chair of the division for 2008. I am pleased to report that due to the hard work of the previous chairs and officers, the division is in great shape. Our membership base is solid, our programming is comprehensive and timely, and we continue to work towards providing value to our membership and the greater environmental community. My goal as chair is to build upon this foundation and to further energize the environmental division. These are exciting times to be engaged in environmental issues. There is no shortage of challenging problems, public interest, and policy discussions. Many of the challenges facing us today are connected with our goals to provide the energy we (think we) need and the environment we want (need) for ourselves and those that come later. There is a renewed sense that we must deal with these environment and energy issues now, and we are. Exciting things are happening at the individual, local, state, national, and international levels. In the university world that I live I am stimulated by the interest in these issues by students at the elementary, junior high and high school levels, and by incoming college students. They are empowered by the winds of change (e.g., a wind turbine at their school, biodiesel in their bus, and the recognition that engaging in climate change science and service is a Nobel undertaking), and they want to change the world. It is our job to help them.
