HONORS SPOTLIGHT: 2011 ENERGY STAR NATIONAL BUILDING COMPETITION

Score one for the Knights of the University of Central Florida. The Orlando-based school recently took top honors. not witn an athletic team, but with a parking garage.On November 2, 2011, the U.S. EPA announced that the parking garage on the university's main campus had won the agency's 2011 Energy Star National Building Com petition: Battle of the Buildings. The competition, now in its second year, pitted building sites around the country in a head-to-head battle to save energy, reduce costs, and better protect people's health and the environment. UCF bested 244 other participating sites by decreasing energy in the parking garage by 63-2%. Together, all competitors cut their energy usage by more than 240 million kBtus, their energy costs by $5.2 million, and their annual greenhouse gas emissions by an amount equal to the electricity used by more than 3,600 homes.
