EPA Clarification of Sludge Gas Treatment Process Provides Municipalities an Alternative to Incinerators for Handling Sewage Waste...: William Shakespeare once posed the question, "What's in a name?" suggesting that what we call something has little to do with its actual nature. For the MaxWest Company, however, the attachment of the wrong "name" or category could have prevented it from launching a promising new technology that offers a sustainable alternative to conventional processes for treating municipal sewage sludge. If the company's sewage sludge gasification technology had been designated as an "incinerator," then its implementation would have been hampered by emissions guidelines and compliance rules that are not fully applicable to this treatment technology. But, a ruling earlier this year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that Max West's sludge gasifier near Sanford, FL, is "not an incinerator" marked a victory not only for the company but also, according to an agency press announcement, "for taxpayers in municipalities looking for a sustainable alternative to costly incineration."
