A Climate of Crisis: America in the Age of Environmentalism

Patrick Allitt's survey of American environmentalism has all the qualities one would want in a synthetic overview or college textbook. It has a clear argument, broad and thorough coverage, and an engaging and highly readable style. It is also very affordable in paperback. Nevertheless, I would caution against using it as a stand-alone textbook in an environmental history or US history course.
