Early diagenetic organic matter oxidation reactions operating within the organic- rich sediments at Salford Quays clearly have a significant impact on the post- depositional mobility of metals. Fe, Mn and associated metals are released into the upper 15 cm of sediment pore-waters as a result of bacterial Fe(Ⅲ) and Mn(Ⅳ) re- duction. Liberated metals diffuse into the upper parts of the sediment column where they reprecipitate as metal sulphides and/or oxides. As a result of this cycling, surface sediments are enriched in metals by at least an order of magnitude.
