摘要

Facing Nature: Levinas and Environmental Thought brings fresh perspective to a dilemma familiar to readers of Emmanuel Levinas: is his ethics practicable? After all, it is premised upon the inordinateness of my responsibility to the other, that is, upon the impossibility of my ever fulfilling this obligation. The mind boggles to imagine expanding the scope of this inordinate responsibility to include not only human others but also animals and ecosystems; yet such is the mental exercise demanded in William Edelglass, James Hatley, and Christian Diehm's edited volume.
