Announcing the Winner of the Holmes Rolston, Ⅲ Early Career Essay Prize

The International Society for Environmental Ethics and the Center for Environmental Philosophy are pleased to announce the winner of the second Holmes Rolston, Ⅲ Early Career Essay Prize, J. Michael Scoville's essay,'"Historical Environmental Values," which is published in this issue of the journal. The essay reaffirms the position that reckoning with the history of natural objects is important in coming to a proper understanding of their value and hence to proper policy decisions. It also explores how best to combine "end-state" and historical approaches to valuation, a key theoretical issue in environmental ethics and general ethical theory. Dr. Scoville is an assistant professor in the History and Philosophy Department at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. He specializes in ethics and environmental philosophy, with interests in both theoretical and applied areas. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 2011, with a dissertation titled "Environmental Values, Animals, and the Ethical Life."
