摘要

At a time when the damaging impact of human behavior upon the natural environment is nearly impossible to ignore, it may be helpful to think through alternative ways of relating to the environment. Chris Framarin's Hinduism and Environmental Ethics: Law, Literature, and Philosophy helps us to do just that and more. Indian environmental ethics is both ancient and contemporary: its core themes and concerns can be traced back over 3,000 years, and scholars continue to reveal how Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain philosophies have anticipated contemporary ecological theories. Focusing on a selection of key texts from one of these traditions, the message of Framarin's book is loud and clear: Hindu India has long recognized the direct moral standing of all living beings, but we need to continue examining its rich texts and traditions in order to disclose the arguments that support this view.
