Public announcements in noisy places could be made quieter and clearer, thanks to research led by the University of Edinburgh. Software that alters speech before it is broadcast over speakers makes it more audible amid background noise. The research team in an EU project studied how speech was perceived by listeners, with tests to pinpoint the components of speech easily heard by people in noisy places.
