Not many people shred documents while they are watching television. And that's probably just as well, according to the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) experts at the TUEV Sued Product Service testing and compliance group's assessment centre at Fareham in Hampshire. Because in their experience, nothing really beats a cheap shredder for generating the kind of interference that will knock your TV completely out of its stride. "The problem with the cheap ones," says Dave Wilson, director at the Fareham site in charge of all testing operations, "is that they have an open commutator motor and no suppression at all and they're usually housed in some cheap plastic."
