The heart of upmarket Kensington, just down the road from where the royal baby lives, isn't the usual kind of place where you'd go looking for a chemical plant. But Imperial College has been part of the local infrastructure for so long that what goes on inside one of the UK's foremost engineering universities barely rates a second glance. And in fact to find the pilot plant that's investigating the technology of carbon capture and storage, you have to delve pretty deeply inside Imperial. Shoehorned into the centre of the chemical engineering department from above, the pilot plant is a vertical laboratory over four floors invisible to the outside world.
