Projects to test carbon store ideas

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is backing four research projects to study the geological viability and safety of storing CO_2 underground in depleted North Sea oil and gas fields or saline aquifers. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is seen as a technology that could help meet stringent target reductions in CO_2 emissions by 2050. The EPSRC has put in £37 million as part of an overall government £125 million research and development programme on CCS.
