Cleanrooms are a multi-billion industry worldwide and a multimillion square foot area on the face of the globe. Recently updated research by the McIlvaine Company, which analyses global trends in the industries that use cleanrooms, suggests that a global area of 131 million square feet, about 4.7 times the traditional area of the City of London, will be inside certified cleanrooms in 2014, up from 125 million in 2013. Microelectronics, semiconductors, telecommunications and Pharmaceuticals are the big users and much of the growth these days comes from the areas of the Far East where the electronics and telecoms industries are concentrated, from India, Latin America and Eastern Europe where drug companies now site new production facilities, and from places such as Russia where adherence to world standards is being more rigorously enforced.
