AV Technology has launched a hand-held oil condition checker for monitoring the lubrication of machinery. The ROC 500 provides on the spot checks, minimising the number of samples sent off to laboratories. The device, which costs £1,925, uses a patented Tan Delta, temperature-stable oil quality sensor to measure the permittivity of each sample. Results from the sensor are uploaded to specialist software based on algorithms from years of laboratory research into the correlation between oil permittivity and its lubrication performance. The permittivity values for a wide range of "clean" oils are included in the database. Based on the results of the sensor testing the ROC 500 software will show either a green, amber or red icon: respectively fit for purpose; significantly deteriorated and requiring further analysis; and not fit for purpose and needing to be changed immediately.
