The contemporary environmental engineer

I often get blank looks when I am asked "What is my Profession?" and I reply "I am an Environmental Engineer". I'm sure most of us who claim that title experience the same thing, even if the details of our explanation may vary widely. Just as environmental engineering, as a subject, is wide-ranging, so the SEE is a very broad society, with expertise in a wide range of technological areas. When the society was founded in 1959, environmental engineering meant the testing and development of products to survive in an environment. This has been the cornerstone of the soci- ety's membership, company involvement and technological focus ever since.
