The ebola outbreak has focused attention on controlling biohazards in a world where pathogens can travel across the globe with every long distance flight. And it is not just new, mutated viruses -bacteria are also evolving their way round the antibiotics that have protected us so successfully since the 1940s. No drugs effective against resistant gram-negative bacteria, the so-called superbugs, are even on the horizon.
