The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK's national stan- dards laboratory - that means its staff "hold the right measurement answer". They provide the primary standards that test the testing machines and measure the measurement processes that are used every day across all sectors of British industry. Back in March 1902, the then Prince of Wales (later to be King George V) officially opened NPL. Its stated goal was to "bring scientific knowledge to bear practically upon our everyday industrial and commercial life, to break down the barrier between theory and practice and to effect a union between science and commerce."
