With origins in the 1980s, highly accelerated life testing (HALT) and highly accelerated stress screening (HASS) are relatively new techniques that are making considerable improvements to the quality and reliability of civil and military aerospace products. Initial acceptance was strongest within the consumer electronics sector because of the rapid turnover of product lines, the need to include the latest technology and ever shorter time to market. Qualmark, a supplier of HALT and HASS chambers, says that the military and aviation sectors, which traditionally rely on established test procedures, are embracing these two methods to augment their test programs.
