摘要

Imperial College researchers have started work on an implantable sensor that will provide 24-hour monitoring for patients with chronic heart problems. The team has received a £760,000 grant from the Wellcome Trust to develop a miniature sensor. Smaller than a five pence piece, the sensor will monitor patients who have undergone heart operations or who have conditions that can lead to heart failure. This will dispense with the need for frequent visits to hospitals for check-ups -time-consuming and costly. The sensor would instead provide doctors with a constant flow of information, allowing them to predict illnesses better and time operations to maximise their effectiveness.
