Neil Fulton: Independent companies in the automotive test industry have been an integral part of the progress made by the vehicle manufacturers to produce highly refined, quiet and durable vehicles, capable of exceptional performance, when required. It is essential that these companies continue to develop innovative, forward-thinking products and services that exceed the demands set by their customers. Importantly, the facilities and equipment required in future will inevitably need to identify small improvements in product performance and this will require advanced technology products. For example, the industry has, for many years, relied on two-wheel drive chassis dynamometers for exhaust emissions and fuel consumption testing. With the introduction of regenerative braking, independent hub dynamometers may become the equipment of choice for those offering their services to the wider automotive test market. Equally, tight control of temperature (hot and cold), humidity and air pressure will be required to create the test procedures necessary for these small but important gains.
