Once upon a time, not so very long ago, the education system as recognised by everyone consisted of schools, colleges and universities. And that was pretty much it. If you did well at school, you stayed there until there were no more exams to pass, and then you passed seamlessly on into further or higher education, emerging, at the end, with lots of qualifications, ready to take your place in the world of work.
