Testing for electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) tends to form part of the type approval that products all go through in order to be sold on world markets and to gain certification such as the CE mark. But this certification usually applies to new products: what happens to those that are in service for long periods, or are expected to work after a long time on the shelf? There is an increasing trend for testing to cover operational aspects of a product: how it operates through its lifetime and not just when it is new. And that does not just mean items in continuous operation.
