Protecting Europe's Seas

Cooperative international efforts to protect or improve marine and coastal environmental quality in Europe are more than 25 years old. Aided by the burgeoning environmental movements and rising environmental awareness in the 1960s and 1970s, an alliance between scientists and environmental activists pushed concern for oceans and regional seas onto the international political agenda. At the time, little was known about the state of oceanic and regional sea environments.
