Humans collectively make extensive use of oceans, which cover about 70 percent of the Earth's surface, for transport, nourishment, resource extraction, and recreation. Indeed, it has been estimated that 44 percent of the world's population lives within 200 kilometers (km) of a coastline. Long recognized as part of the global commons, waters beyond 370 km from shore (the exclusive economic zone) fall under international jurisdiction. This article highlights some of the Web-accessible organizations that oversee the oceans of the world.
