Vilsack Adds Another Year to Interim Policy Overseeing Plans in Federal Roadless Areas

The Agriculture Department announced June 1 that Secretary Tom Vilsack was issuing an interim directive for a third consecutive year to require all decisions on proposed road construction or forest management projects in inventoried roadless areas to be made by his office. The interim policy was adopted while the Agriculture Department, including the U.S. Forest Service, awaits a ruling on the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit.
