Maui Agrees to $5.1 Million Settlement To Address Alleged Air Violations at Landfill

The County of Maui, Hawaii, has agreed to a settlement valued at $§.1 million with the Environmental Protection Agency over alleged Clean Air Act violations at a local landfill (United States v. County of Maui, D. Haw., No. l:12-cv-571, proposed consent decree filed 10/23/12). Under terms of the agreement, Maui will implement enhanced gas monitoring to reduce the threat of underground fires at the Central Maui Landfill in Puunene, follow response procedures in the event of fire, construct a renewable energy wind farm to reduce fossil fuel emissions near the plant, and pay a civil penalty of $388,000. The settlement was filed Oct. 23 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii, according to Dean Hi-guchi of EPA's Region 9 press office.
