Feinstein Preparing Carbon Fee Legislation That Would Apply Only to Power Utilities

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said June 20 she is preparing legislation that would impose a fee of $10 per ton of carbon dioxide emitted from power plants. Feinstein said the fee would only apply to the utility industry and said she will introduce the bill within "a couple of weeks." Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, alluded to the legislation during a June 19 media avail- ability and promised it would be considered as part of a hearing in July on climate change.
