The U.S. Coast Guard issued interim guidance Feb. 26 for ships and floating platforms to dispose garbage in compliance with the International Maritime Organization's revised regulations, which took effect Jan. l. The agency said the interim guidance will help implement the amended regulations under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex V, which establishes a "general prohibition on discharge of garbage into seas."
