Buyer of Former Baltimore Steel Mill Pledges Over $48 Million for Cleanup of Site

The new owner of the former Sparrows Point steel-making facility near Baltimore has pledged over $48 million to ensure cleanup of historic contamination of the property with an eye toward redeveloping the 3,100-acre site into a transportation and manufacturing "economic engine." The commitment is spelled out in a 120-page administrative consent order with the Maryland Department of the Environment that took effect Sept. 18-the date when Sparrows Point Terminal LLC (SPT) bought the site from its most recent owner, Sparrows Point LLC, one of a succession of owners that have come and gone since longtime operator Bethlehem Steel ended its 87-year run there in 2003.
