Leadership at the personal level

When the Year of the Young Engineer was proposed, four primary themes were identified: the Engineering Image, the Voice of Young Engineers, the Future of the Profession, and the Active Engineer. Leadership is an important consideration underlying all of these themes. As a concept, it defies simple definition; it means different things to different people. Despite the difficulty in defining the concept, many displays of leadership do enjoy broad recognition in the community. Examples include the role of a military commander in conflict, the CEO of a company, the leader of a project team, and the captain of a local sporting team. An understanding of leadership can be gained by observing the behaviour of those in these roles.
