All components of a compressed air system must be meticulously matched to their demand, as explained in this feature's lead article. The feature also includes the development of artificial muscles to help disabled people, a training system for pneumatics, and new products. Thanks to its versatility as well as its operating efficiency compressed air is as important an energy source for today's highly automated industrial production as is electricity or gas. As a rule the stoppage of the compressed air supply leads to a complete standstill to production reliant on air, as would a power cut. Hence a modern compressed air system has to meet maximum availability and cost efficiency. To achieve this, cost analysis, cost planning and ongoing cost management are inalienable prerequisites for running a compressed air supply economically and safely.
