Engineers start work older and retire later than the general population

Since the influential treasury Intergenerational Report wasrnpublished a few years ago, policy decision making in Australia has accepted that the Australian population is growing older. At the macroeconomic level this reality has been recognised by greater emphasis on building productivity growth and, in a more limited way, questioning prevailing attitudes towards retirement ages. The microeconomic implications of population aging will increasingly occupy the attention of policy makers over the coming decade. It is appropriate that the engineering profession considers the circumstances it may confront and how the profession might react to them.
