The Australian Centre for Sustainable Mining Practices (ACSMP) was launched on 31 March at UNSW. In attendance were ACSMP director Associate Professor David Laurence, Japanese consul-general Masahiro Kohara, representatives of ACSMP sponsor Mitsubishi and UNSW faculty of engineering dean Professor Graham Davies. "The concept for this centre stemmed from the philosophy that responsible and sustainable development of mining can reduce poverty," said Laurence.
