Ensuring that Australia has the engineering capacity for submarines

In the Defence White Paper 2009, the federal government announced its decision "to acquire 12 new future submarines, to be assembled in South Australia. This will be a major design and construction program spanning three decades, and will be Australia's largest ever defence project". Due to the changing strategic situation in our region Australia has no choice but to proceed with this project in one form or another.
