Bring rail services into 21 st century

Irefer to the letter from Tim Calver in the November issue of Engineers Australia. I concur that engineers should provide realistic options to the public, but challenge some of his comments. The population of the greater London area is around 13.5 million (not 20 million) and that of the greater Manchester region, 2.7 million (not 17 million), and while the population density of Australia is around three people/km~2, the population density of the zone that would benefit from high speed rail (HSR) between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane is about 40 people/km~2.
